You would have been 5 years old this year if not for the fact that you left us too early. We still miss you, especially your mum, dad, fat fat and Barley. By the way you now have a new little baby brother name Ayden. He is coming to 3 months old in a few days time.

Hey there every pup, this is Barley posting today. My big brother Cocoa has been hospitalized since yesterday evening. It all started last Saturday afternoon when he puked out some rubbery or cloth-like material. Mum couldn’t quite make out what it was but she was thinking since he puked it out, he should be fine after that. But that night, Cocoa seemed to lost interest in his dinner as it took him longer than usual to finish it.

By Sunday, he was totally rejecting all food and water and began to have bloody soft stools. Mum forced fed him some honey water that night, thinking he should get better the next day as he didn’t puke out the water. Come the next day (Monday), Cocoa was still rejecting all food and water and looking very listless. Mum cooked some chicken breast meat thinking that this should definitely entice him to eat but she was wrong. Cocoa didn’t even want to drink the broth! Mum was really alarmed by then because something is obviously going very wrong.

So she brought Cocoa to the vet last evening and they did an x-ray and blood test. The x-ray was showing that there was some suspicious whitish shadow in his abdomen and it doesn’t appear to be any type of metal or hard object. It could possibly be food or ‘something else’ (but he hasn’t been eating since Saturday). The result from the blood test did not indicate that he is having any kind of infection or organ failure. All readings are within the normal acceptable range. Neither is he running a temperature or having any pain anywhere. The vet then suggested keeping Cocoa overnight at the clinic so that they could put him on a drip to keep him hydrated since he hasn’t been drinking water.

This morning the vet took another x-ray and the whitish shadow has moved down a bit, but not as much as the vet would like to see. The vet also mentioned that Cocoa had some disgusting bloody diarrhea again last night. He managed to eat a little bit of food this morning and didn’t throw up. They then did an ultrasound on him and commented that the whitish shadow look to be some sort of string/cloth/foam like material. If that is true, it could possibly get tangled inside causing obstruction. So if Cocoa doesn’t poop out that ‘thing’ tonight, the vet will have to operate on him tomorrow morning.

Sigh poor Cocoa. I am really missing him. Mum is really worried sick. Please pray for him to be strong and get well soon. Mum is going to visit him later and hopefully take some pics of him. We’ll keep you guys updated on his progress…

Mum got someone to customise a big dog bed for ~~stinky~~ Barley sometime back and she was really pleased to finally have a bed that is big enough to fit us both!

We decided to come out with a new award, called the 'OOPS I ATE IT' award! Mum made this humble little award featuring a tray full of yummy cookies and with one obvious missing cookie in the middle indicating that somebody 'stole' it! BOL!!!

Okay so here are the rules to this award:

"When accepting this award, you must blog about the food you have stolen when your humans were not watching. If you have never stolen any food, you must have been a really good pup! You can accept this yummy tray of cookies as your reward! Next add the logo of this award to your blog (optional), then nominate at least 5 other furry blogs and let them know by leaving a message on their blogs."

WOO! So let me start off first! Well actually I have not stolen a lot of food, mainly because I'm often too short to reach the table tops. But there was once mum stepped off briefly during her dinner and I managed to jump onto her chair and slurped up almost half a big bowl of hearty clam chowder soup! Mum didn't think I would dare do it because the soup was still quite hot! But she was so wrong!!

Next up is stinky Barley. To record, he'd stolen and eaten:

- banana peels

- a sachet of sugar

- 2 Ferrero Rocher chocolate balls (yes together with the gold foil wrapper and all). But no he's not dead yet.

- some leftovers of a BBQ sambal stingray, mainly those soft bones of the stingray along with some sambal chili paste, and the whole piece of charred banana leaf below it.

Basically when no one is watching, Barley stands up on his hind legs to reach for unwashed dishes at the sink and savor whatever leftovers he finds! So unfair! If only I could do that too!!!!!!

Howling at the Moon?

Hello every pup! This is Barley posting today! Recently my big brother Cocoa has a habit of howling at the full moon (we don't know if it's really full but looks full anyway).

It first happened last month when there was a full moon hanging in the sky. It was almost midnight when mum saw him sitting and staring up intently below the window. He was looking straight up and not moving at all. Mum thought he was staring at some insect but she couldn't find any. After a few seconds, Cocoa HOWLED and HOWLED! It was a long howl! Cocoa had never howled like that when he is at home. Even when there are strangers at the door, he would only give ONE low bark or short howl and that's it. Of course mum rushed forward and looked up at what he was staring, and she saw the bright full moon in the dark sky.

We forgot about it completely until the same thing happened again last night. Weird eh?? Mum jokingly says Cocoa is turning into a werewolf. I myself wasn't at all interested in the moon. Hmm, any of you pups howl at the moon too?

Hello every pup! Thank you all for all the well wishes. My ear is completely fine now WOOHOO!!!!

I had forgotten to mention that while we were at the vet the other day, the vet commented that I'm one healthy dog as I have a good weight (at 10.4kg), glossy coat and excellent pink skin. And my teeth is great too! All thanks to our barf diet and daily crunching on raw meaty bones!

Hmm.. I wonder if I'm too skinny at 10.4kg? Guess I must start begging for more table scraps now on!!

Ear Infection

Yeah we are back, and I am down with a nasty ear infection (in my right ear). Mum just took me to the vet this morning and I have to be on ear drops twice daily for the next 14 days!

Pooooor me....

Mum suspect that it must have been ~~stinky~~ Barley's drool that caused my ear infection because my whole head always gets drenched by his drool whenever we play. Also, the vet didn't seem to find any ear mites during the checkup. It just looked really red and raw inside. Sigh....

Well... Hopefully my ear infection clears up soon. I really hate those ear drops. IT STINGS!!!! :-(

Well as most of you know, mum always keep our nails as short as possible because she cringes at the sound of our nails clicking on the floor. Most of the time she will try to file our nails instead of cutting them because we simply hate the nail cutter and occasionally end up bleeding when she cut into our quick!

Even daily walks does not wear down our nails much because 50% of the time we are walking on grass instead of pavements/roads. Mum tried out numerous dog nail filer products available on the market, ranging from the normal dog nail file emery boards to electric nail grinder. Normal emery boards takes forever to file down our nails, it's only good for smoothing out rough edges. The grinder isn't too bad but somehow you have to hold the grinder at a 'correct angle' when filing, else the nail sort of 'trembles' as you file etc.

Recently we learnt a great tip from the Dughallmor Beagles. Their mom file their nails using grip tape (the ones you stick on skate boards to prevent slipping). So our mum decided to try it out too. Our silly mum didn't know where the skate stores in Singapore are located, so she went to the DIY / Self-fix store instead but the store does not sell grip tape for skate boards. Instead the sales person recommended another type of adhesive grip tape from 3M that is also used for anti-slip purposes. Basically it looks and feels like the coarse material on the road, and comes in a roll (see pic below).

You will need to cut out a piece of the tape and then stick it on 'something' (like a ruler or a small box etc) and then use it just like an emery board for filing nails. True enough, it works really well filing down my nails! However, it takes a bit more effort to file Barley's thick nails, and black specks of dust comes off from the tape as you file, hence wearing off easily. But it does work better than most dog nail file emery boards you find from the pet stores!

And it was by chance recently that mum discovered yet another great tool. It's a foot/heel scrubber (those meant for hoomans) made of steel (see pic below). Basically it is those very tiny raised steel dots you see that really does the job. Thick nails (like what Barley has) gets filed down amazingly in just seconds! It really works like magic! The best part about it is that it doesn't seem to wear off yet even after using it for a few times!

The Verdict

3M Grip Tape (Rating: 8 / 10)

Pros:-

File nails easily.
Works better than most types of dog nail file emery boards.

Cons:-

Costly ($20+).
Requires much effort when filing thick nails.
Black dust specks coming off the tape as you file.
Wears off easily after a few uses.

Foot/Heel Scrubber (Rating: 10 / 10)

Pros:-

Cheap ($2).
Tiny raised steel dots file nails very very easily.
Does not seem to wear off even after using it for a few times now.
Comes with an ergonomic grip handle.
File thick nails down in just seconds (WOW!).

Cons:- None so far!

Thumbs up for the steel foot/heel scrubber! Cheap and good! Mum is guessing those foot/heel scrubbers made of pumice stone could also do the job pretty well, but they may also wear down easily (though we haven't tried it). Maybe you guys out there would like to get your mom to try out and let us know which one works best for you!

So, bye bye to horrible nail cutters and HOORAY to no more bleeding due to cut quicks!!!! WOO!!!!

Play Time

When it comes to play, ~~stinky~~ Barley is always the first to snatch the toy with his mouth. I NEVER catch toys with my mouth because I prefer to chase after it. For that reason, he's always the first to catch hold of the toy, and I'll be chasing behind him~~, cursing and swearing~~. Once he's done playing, mum has to make him do a 'sit-stay' before she can really play fetch with me~~, while the bugger stares with envy~~.

Pawdicure gone wrong

Mum is ever so diligent in keeping our nails short because she gets irritated whenever she hears us making clicking noises as we walk. She says the noise makes her cringe, like those noises you make when you scratch your nails on a chalk board. So, she makes it a point to trim our nails once every week. And here's what happened...

I'm THREE today! Happy Birthday to me!! WOO!! Well, nothing fanciful for our birthdays but with some extra treats and a ~~very very small~~ cupcake!

Of course the hoomans didn't let me eat the cake in peace. They had to make me perform some tricks before I get to eat it. So unfair! It's MY birthday isn't it??!!

Okay, so we are supposed to list at least 10 honest things about ourselves. After some discussion and to be fair, me and ~~stinky~~ Barley decided to list 5 honest things each. Here's me first!

Cocoa

I love to curl up and sleep on mum's lap, even if it means her legs are getting numb (I weigh 12kg+).
I don't like to eat bananas. Strange eh? I don't know why too but I'll either reject it totally or eat it very slowly as if the banana ~~is somewhat poisonous~~ tastes awful.
I love my stuffed kong more that anything else. I don't mind sharing food with ~~stinky~~ Barley but if he touches my stuffed kong, he'll get it from me. Stuffed kong is like a toy and food all rolled in one. It's my pride and joy.
I get the treats out from my stuffed kong faster than ~~stinky~~ Barley. I bite and throw the kong against the wall/floor to let the treats fall out. ~~Stinky~~ Barley simply lick his kong til the treats get soggy inside.
Before I had my 'snippy', I had a thing going on for small white, female dogs (poodle, maltese etc). Don't ask me why, I can't remember.

Barley

I prefer to sleep on the cold hard floor instead of my bed because it's cooler!
I always greet my hoomans by holding a toy (any toy I can find lying around) in my mouth.
I ever chewed on the TV remote control one night and managed to switch on the TV! That was like 3am in the morning! Mum was glad that I did not chew on the volume button!
I rarely bark at all, even when there are strangers at the door.
I love to chase after the laser beam. I'm always fascinated with the little red dot!

Happy New Year to everybody! Wooo it's year 2009!! How time flies! I am going to be 2 years old this year and my big brother, Cocoa is coming to 3 years old! Here's our wish list for year 2009!

Cocoa:

Alrighty, mum says we are not going to be blogging that much in the coming days as she is going to be busy with the festive season around the corner. Grandpa's Blunder - Dirty Paw

Grandpa washes my paws whenever we return from our walks. The first time grandpa washed my paws, he thought I had stepped on some nasty black gunk or something during our walk. As he didn't have his old glasses with him (again!), he didn't realize that the 'black gunk' is actually the pigmentation on my paw. You see, my paw pads are pink, but my right paw pad has some dark pigmentation.

My paws are NOT dirty!!

So grandpa thought "Oh what stubborn, nasty gunk you stepped on!", and started to rub and wash my paw so hard that I started to whine! Luckily he stopped after hearing me whine.

It was after sometime that grandpa realized his blunder. The hooomans even had a good laugh over my misfortune! You know, it's too bad the victim wasn't ~~stinky~~ Barley. He has solid black paw pads.

My big brother, Cocoa realized that he had committed social suicide himself after his last blog entry. Now the whole world knows his stinky habit of rolling in poop, and his heavenly spa-like experience with poop and fish oil treatment on his coat.

Mum is sure glad that I don't find rolling in poop a pleasure though. But like our good friend Bee Bee had commented, at least I know Cocoa loves me as a little brother (he refuses to admit it), because he loves stinky stuffs, and he calls me stinky Barley. Hehee!

Hmm... so who's the REAL stinky one now? :-P

Grandpa's Blunder - Fishy Dog

When I was younger (before stinky Barley appeared in this household), grandpa used to come over and bring me out for walks in the late afternoon. One day during one of our walks, I went to roll in some dog's poop. Grandpa was of course grossed out with my whole head and ears stained with dog's poop (I was rather pleased though), and immediately dragged me home for a shower.

As grandpa can't read English and didn't have his old glasses with him, he couldn't figure out which shampoo was for dogs. And there wasn't anybody at home as the hoomans were all at work. He searched high and low and finally found a bottle that looked somewhat like a dog's shampoo.. or so he thought. So he proceeded to shower me with this 'dog shampoo'. He thought this 'shampoo' smelt kind of weird, doesn't lather at all, and too oily. Grandpa then thought it must be some kind of 'dog conditioner' or something and continued to rinse me without realizing that he had been showering me with....

Yes. He thought Lipiderm was a dog shampoo because the bottle looked like a shampoo bottle and with a picture of a dog in front, it can't be wrong! But he was wrong! Lipiderm is a fish oil supplement which I used to take when I was younger!

Grandpa then left the house, leaving a very greasy me in the house. When mum returned from work, she was appalled by an overwhelming stench of what smelt like rotten fish the moment she stepped into the house. Remember I had dog's poop on my head and ears? Yeah, so the smell was like poop and fish all rolled in one. She was then greeted by a very wet, greasy, stinky dog, who was at the same time trying to walk on all fours without slipping (the floor was greasy too!). She almost threw up when she kneel down to smell my head and ears.

Mum then called up grandpa and realized what had happened. Without further delay, she dragged me to the bathroom again to shower me. I was so oily that mum had to shower me THREE times before I am squeaky clean again. And next she confined me in the bathroom while she mopped the whole house FOUR times as the floor was too greasy. After all that clean up, mum nearly died from exhaustion. Ever since then, mum will paste a label with the chinese word 'dog' on our shampoo bottles.. just to be sure nothing similar happens again.

To tell you the truth, that rotten fish smell was really heavenly! It could possibly be better, or if not the next best thing to getting skunked (we don't have skunks over here so I'm not sure what it smells like)! Rolling in poop is nothing, but can you imagine having poop and oil treatment on your coat all at the same time?? It's truly an experience of a lifetime!! WOO!!

Crunchy Tendon Chews

Look what we've got! Air dried tendons! The rolled up ones are veal tendons and the long ones are ox tendons. These are really hard, crunchy chews great for cleaning our teeth. They smell really great too!

Hello every pups! This is Barley posting today. I've got a new rubber turkey thigh toy today and of course I get to chew it first! See how annoyed my big brother Cocoa was in the background?

Why Stinky?

Some of my furiends have asked me why I keep calling my dear brother Stinky Barley. Well here's why:

He was stinky, dirty and smelt like a sewer when mum rescued and brought him home. Yucks.
He eats and drinks sloppily, making a mess everywhere. Yucks.
He drools ALOT. Yucks.

That's not all. In fact I am often a 'victim' of his drool. See for yourself:

Actually he isn't stinky these days but somehow I just got very used to calling him stinky Barley since day one. You know first impression always counts right? It's the same as saying smart Cocoa, cutie Cocoa or handsome Cocoa etc, get it?

Mum: OH GIMME A BREAK!!

Okayyyy.. mum's watching. I'll write something nice. Oh yeah, Barley is indeed a good brother because he comes to my 'rescue' whenever some other dogs we meet in the park tries to hump/bully me. He comes running over and places his big ~~stinky~~ paw on the other dog's back telling him to back off. Cool eh?

(But what he didn't know is that I don't really mind other dogs humping me because I would be too busy sniffing another dog's butt or the grass, or I just simply wouldn't care anyway.)

So as the famous song goes "He ain't heavy, he's my brother", my version would either be:

"He ain't stinky, he's my brother" or
"He IS heavy, he's my brother. But it's OK."

Now how does that sound?? *Sincere grin*

Mum says I need to blog more, so here's Barley posting again! We went to the dog park on last evening and met up with lots of our fellow doggies.

Lesson Learnt and another Award!

We happened to find some old pictures of our 'parties' and decided to share with you guys hehe. Mum learnt her lesson to never leave any destructable things within our reach when she goes to work. Why do I say that? Look what she found one day when she came back from work! *Proud*

You see, the hoomans really have to understand that they CAN'T blame us for chewing up things when they themselves left those things out there for us. Makes sense? It's the same as leaving a roast chicken on the floor and expecting us not even to go lick it. That is just IMPOSSIBLE! Simple logic right? What took the hoomans several times to learn their lesson??

We get to cut our nails every week and mum will always file my nails into round shape after that. She said that I like to cuddle up with her and my nails will hurt her if she donch file them smooth. So I end up with round nails. And yes, my paw pads are pink, not black. Funny eh?

Here's ~~stinky~~ Barley's nails. Mum need not file them smooth because he doesn't come cuddling with humans. He prefers to sleep on the cold hard floor anytime.

Mooncakes Just for Us!

Mooncake festival is just around the corner and mum made us some doggy mooncakes with steamed purple sweet potatoes and normal potatoes. The green powder on top of the mooncakes is organic kelp powder.

As part of our BARF diet, we get to chew on bigger raw meaty lamb bones once in a while. It's great to keep our teeth clean and exercise our jaws! Here's me chewing my lamb bone!

Here's Barley posting again! Mum finally bought her first DSLR camera because she wants to take nice pics of me and Cocoa. She is sick of getting 'ghost dogs' in our pics cos we always can't stay still! So she bought a Nikon D60. Tada!

She couldn't take nice outdoor pics for us because it has been raining for the past 2 days. So she decided to take some indoor pics to test out the camera. Here's some unglam pics of us under poor lightings as there was no sun coming in either.

HUMILIATED

Everything started off well this morning. We had our breakfast and as usual after that, I had to do my "big business". All went well until I started to walk off...

WAIT. Something is NOT right. Something is following me! I turned around but couldn't find it. WHAT IS FOLLOWING ME?? I kept turning and turning but I can't see IT! IT was just right below my tail! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?????? WHY IS IT FOLLOWING ME?????

By then I was really petrified. I kept turning / scooting / running all at the same time, desperately trying to make that thing go away. But it stayed with me! ~~Stinky~~ Barley came over to check out what's happening. He stared at that thing and gave me a 'woah-how-did-you-do-that' look on his face.

ARGHH WHAT EXACTLY IS THAT THING??????

Finally mum came over to see what the fuss is all about. She saw that thing and guess what she did? She laughed loudly!! LAUGHED!!!!!! What's so funny???!!! I donch geddit!!! Can't she at least help me chase that thing away or something??

At last mum got hold of a piece of paper towel and shouted at me to stay still. I did. She then pulled that thing out from my 'you-won't-want-to-know-where'. That feeling was totally beyond words I tell ya. And yes, that thing finally doesn't follow me anymore! Thank DOG!

And that was just the beginning. Mum couldn't stop laughing and even started describing to EVERYONE about that thing looking like a string of mini sausages. WHAT THE...?

A string of sausages? Like this??

What exactly is so funny about a string of mini sausages??? How much more do they have to laugh at me? And it doesn't help with that retriever still giving me the 'hey-tell-me-again-how-you-did-that' face til NOW! He thinks it's fun huh? I hope he gets his turn of having mini sausages chasing after him next time.

Mum mentioned she read somewhere that pulling that ~~string of mini sausages~~ thing out from the 'you-won't-want-to-know-where' is not the proper way to do it. And she actually did that to me? BRILLIANT. So, any pup's mums out there be kind enough to share what's the best/proper way to do it?

I am sad, angry and traumatised... and my a$$ hurts.

I hate mum.

'Potato-Chip' Ears?

Hi there every pup! This is Barley posting again!! You know, mum says my big brother, Cocoa's ears are funny. Why? Whenever he does something wrong and gets scolded, or whenever he is submissive, his ears would turn into 'potato chips'! It's true!!

This is how he looks like when he realised that mum knows about what he had done. His ears turn into 'potato chips' and his head looks like an egg.

Mum starts scolding him. He'll pretend he doesn't know anything and starts yawning with his 'potato chips' ears.

And more YAWNINGGG!!!!!!!!! OMDog, doesn't he look spooky in this pic??

He looks away and act like that he CAN'T hear anything.

'Potato chips' ears slowing returning to normal because mum had stopped scolding him.

Mum says my ears do turn into 'potato chips' like Cocoa's too, just that I have smaller ears and more fur on my ears, making them less obvious!

And I donch sit when mum scolds me, I lay flat with my chin on the floor indicating that I'm sorry. Sometimes I will flip over too and mum starts to melt and stop scolding me! Hehe!

Honestly, I really donch know what is the big deal about puppy pictures. Mum squeals whenever she looks at some of my puppy pics. I mean, wasn't that dog in the picture ME? So what's the fuss about? Mum says I was so small and so cute etc etc.

Anyway, mum doesn't really have puppy pics of Barley as he was almost 6 months old or so when she rescued and brought him home. He was then a skinny, stinky dog, almost looking like a mongrel.

Barley's first post

Hello everybody,

This is Barley here and I'm making my first post! Yayy! :-)

I was abandoned by my owner when I was a puppy.. can't really remember much but I know I was living in a cage for quite a while until mum saw me.. and she couldn't bear to leave me alone there because I was very skinny and had nothing to eat but plain cooked rice :-(

Since mum brought me home, Cocoa has been my best buddy! He lets me sleep on his bed and shares his sofa and toys with me :-)

He even lets me chew his head!! See!!

And we hold paws too...

We even share secrets!!

But I donch know why Cocoa seemed to have grown smaller. When I first came, he was just a little bit smaller than me but after a while, he became smaller and smaller.. and shorter and shorter.. hmm.... and it is until recently then he stopped growing smaller.. I wonder what's wrong with him?

(Cocoa: That's because you grew bigger!! I NEVER grew smaller ok!!!! @#%!#$!%#@)

Ok, clever me finally figured out how this works.

So, hmm... what should I blog about?? I'll just start off by introducing myself a little. My name is Cocoa and I'm a male, tri-colour beagle born in Singapore. I have a younger ~~stinky~~ goldie brother called Barley who was born in Aussie. Don't ask me why mum named us after beans... and it was too late when she realised that 'Barley' is a grain and not a bean to be exact. Anyway.. here's some old pics of us:

So, I'm supposed to share my blog with Barley huh. I wonder why.. I thought this is supposed to be MY blog. Moreover, Barley CAN'T type on the keyboard well because his ~~stinky~~ paws are much bigger than mine ok. Well, ok.. I'll let him blog when he has enough practice typing on the keyboard and not chewing on the mouse.

Right, I'll stop here for now. Gotta go check out what that retriever is doing in the kitchen... maybe I can get him to see if there's any food on the table.. *evil grin*
